Soulful singer/songwriter/producer Zena Jones promises listeners a glimpse into another dimension. Rooted in Rock, Funk, Jazz and Rythm & Blues, this Harlem Native, Brooklyn dweller invites you into her world with her high power vocals, eccentric lyrics and captivating melodies, while giving you a feel of what it's like to be in love with Christ.
"...because it's the thing you do the best mommy. Duh!"
It was her young daughter's words of wisdom that gave Zena the clarity to answer that undying question that most ask at some point in their lifetime......why am I here?
Watching Denise Williams on an episode of Soul Train as a little girl is what set Zena off to pursue how to do, what she called back then, that shaky thing in your voice. Singing along to the sounds of the Jacksons, Stephanie Mills, Stevie Wonder, Barbara Streisand, Marvin Gaye, Teena Marie, and Whitney Houston as a kid was favorited over everything else. Unaware, that studying such greats would eventually shape her voice into a force that would penne her, that little girl with the big voice.
That big voice would carry her to the Apollo Theater's Amateur Night stage to win first place, and to countless other talent show victories and guest appearances. Determination led her to study Voice at the Innovation Music School in Syracuse, New York and her alma mater, SUNY Cortland. Then the unthinkable happened - leaving Zena with no musical ambition for a number of years:
" I think I lost hope when my mother passed away. Singing and becoming famous was my promise to her to get us out of the Projects. After she died the whole thing was pointless to me." Thus, management and other opportunities presented themselves shortly after, only for her to turn them down. However, her attempts to leave music alone would fail and the desire to sing and write flooded her heart. After turning her life over to Christ, it was clear. She had to start singing and writing again, and this time, for reasons much bigger than just getting out of the hood.
Zena has since linked up with several bands, lending lead and background vocals, as well as led church worship services. She continues to perform at various venues and events, writes and records, and is set to complete her first EP in 2017.
