Obama Ends Muslim-Targeting Registry Program

Obama has not let his lame duck status restrain him from blocking a number of President-Elect Trump’s plans for office.

Yesterday, Obama withdrew more than 100 million acres of Arctic ocean from the possibility of oil and gas drilling. Today, he has officially ended the post-9/11 registry program, called the National Security Entry-Exit Registration Systems, or Nseers, that targeted immigrants from Muslim countries, The NYT reports. The program has been inactive since 2011, but Trump had suggested he had planned to reinstate the program.

The dismantling of the registry is a big win for progressives, who rallied against Trump’s plans to use the registry to ban Muslim immigrants and identify Muslim citizens.
