A Viral Photo of Hillary Clinton Checking Her BlackBerry Led to Her Email Investigation

A photo of Hillary Clinton texting on her BlackBerry while wearing sunglasses blew up on the Internet in 2012. The photo led to many memes (and an entire Tumblr blog, Texts from Hillary, dedicated to posting memes with the photo), but it also sparked questions from Clarence Finney, who was involved in Freedom of Information Act searches, about whether Clinton had an official government email account, according to Finney’s testimony at a deposition on Wednesday. The questions began after he saw the photo of Clinton on the Internet, reports Politico.

“When Mrs. Clinton’s photo appeared in the media with her using appearing to use some sort of a mobile device, Clarence Finney checked with [information management staff] to confirm … whether the answer was still that she did not have a State.gov e-mail account,” State Department official Karin Lang said in her testimony.
