The F.B.I. Has Discovered New Emails Related to the Hillary Clinton Case

Politics News Hillary Clinton

The F.B.I. revealed on Friday that it had discovered new emails related to the investigations into whether Hillary Clinton or her aides had mishandled classified information. F.B.I. director James Comey wrote in a letter to Congress that emails from an unrelated case “appear to be pertinent to the investigation.”

Comey continued, explaining that the F.B.I. would take steps “to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance to our investigation.” Comey was unclear on the timeframe for the investigation, and on whether he felt the information would prove to be significant.

Reporting by NBC’s Pete Williams suggests that these newly found emails were not sent by Clinton, and the AP has confirmed that these newly found emails are not from Clinton’s own private server. The New York Times is now reporting that the emails on the server were found during an investigation into Anthony Weiner’s sexting.

These new emails come as Clinton’s opponent Donald Trump has fallen behind in the polls, and could signal a shift in the race. Trump had previously slammed the F.B.I. for not pursuing criminal charges against Clinton. Comey’s previous statements on the emails found no evidence of wrongdoing on Clinton’s part, though he did describe her handling of the server as “extremely careless.”
