We all do it. In the morning getting ready for work, running late to meet friends or packing for a trip. We sift through plastic beads and tangled chains trying to find the jewelry pieces we need amid a mess of metals and colors. Few things are more confounding than pulling out one’s Gatsby costume pearls or magically reappearing sweet-sixteen earrings when looking for something to top off an outfit.
Fortunately, Paste has compiled a list of 10 must-have jewelry staples to complete your wardrobe, simplify an overly-comprehensive collection or guide the fledgling accessorizer. And with summer in full swing, now is the perfect time to reduce or collect in order to obtain a jewelry box that is at once minimal and versatile.
And hey, no one is trying to deny a girl the right to add some things along the way—this is just a good jumping off point. But be warned, this is not a list for your “BFF” anklet, that choker you resurrected along with your floral baby doll dress or any kind of chain that attaches around your torso. We don’t hate your memories, we just don’t want to think about a toe ring.

5. The Lariat (Y-Chain):
This piece is one of the trendier items on the list, but made the cut thanks to its versatility. This take on a basic necklace can be worn long or short, thick or thin chain, and is perfect for everything from feminizing a more structured button down, to adding an elegant touch to any neckline.

6. The Cuff:
Ear cuffs are great. Paired with a severe side-part and a little attitude, these cartilage jackets nod to glam rock without going full glitz. Again, they have their place -- just not on this list. Instead, the more timeless investment is the classic wrist cuff. Slightly sturdier than a bangle and definitely not your mom's tennis bracelet, the cuff can be sleek or ornate, worn on both wrists for a boldly symmetrical look or even created by stacking multiple other bracelets. No matter the style, these staples pack a punch, and work in every weight class.
