Marc Jacobs Reveals Star-Studded Promotional Images for Fall 2016 Line

Style News

On Tuesday, designer Marc Jacobs started to reveal the promotional ads for his fall 2016 line of clothing and accessories on Instagram. The designer, who has used the platform before to promote his spring 2016 campaign earlier this year, has taken to the photo-sharing website to give in-depth descriptions of his muses, and how and why they have influenced his creative vision. Photographed by David Sims, the images highlight the exquisite detail of Jacobs’ designs with multi-colored light and textural emphasis.

The ad campaign features portraits of a variety of stars including several high-profile artists, actresses, musicians and models. Missy Elliott, Sissy Spacek, Genesis P-Orridge and Binx Walton number amongst them, all of whom have in some way affected or moved the prolific fashion designer and inspired his latest designs.

“The individuals in these photographs represent a collective embodiment of love, honesty, integrity, courage, strength, curiosity and inspiration,” Jacobs explains in the caption of his portrait of Genesis. “Together, as one story, this collection is a reminder to question and challenge normal and to continue exploring and pushing boundaries.”

The campaign and collection (which features a number of androgynous pieces) couldn’t feel more timely in its promotion of inclusivity and courage, especially in the wake of one of the deadliest hate crimes in American history. Jacobs is not just a creative visionary for featuring such a wide range of personalities and figures in his latest campaign, but a quiet champion of political issues surrounding gender, race and sexuality that continually plague our society.

Though we rarely think of fashion as a remedy to the political and societal ills of the world, social media campaigns like this bridge the gap between the “elite” world of high fashion and the widely consumed mediums of pop culture in a way that promotes positive change through representation and artistry. In a continuing series of portraits for our Fall 2016 ad campaign, the individuals in these photographs represent a collective embodiment of love, honesty, integrity, courage, strength, curiosity and inspiration. Together, as one story, this collection is a reminder to question and challenge normal and to continue exploring and pushing boundaries. To quote Lana Wachowski, “I am suspicious of everything connected to that word [normal]. It is, to my thinking, a politically correct euphemism for obedience and conformity.” GENESIS P-ORRIDGE, Unconditional Love Through music, poetry and art, Genesis continues to explore, shape shift and define what it means to give love, be loved and live love. For me, Genesis is a sort of come-to-life definition of realness and authenticity and how being lost in an experience or new idea can result in growth and evolution. @pandrogyne Photographed by David Sims and styled by Katie Grand.

MISSY, Supa Dupa Fly From the moment I heard, The Rain, back in 1997, I was entranced by the genius rhythms and brilliant rhymes of Missy Elliott. Missy’s music has kept me and my design team happily energized through countless weekdays, weeknights and weekends during those long hours of sketching, fitting, styling and doing looks. In addition to the boundless energy of her music are the visually pulsating and wildly cartoon-like music videos she made in collaboration with the talented and visionary, Hype Williams. I am in continued awe of Missy’s ability to push the boundaries of the style of music both to the eye and to the ear. It was a dream of mine to work with her and I’m happy to share this portrait by David Sims for our Fall ’16 campaign.;;;;);;
