Patti LuPone, Christine Ebersole to Star in Broadway’s War Paint

Starting on March 7, songs based off the New York Times bestseller War Paint will fill the halls of Broadway’s Nederlander Theater. The musical follows the careers of cosmetic pioneers Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden, played by Tony Award-winners Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole.

The production also boasts Tony-nominated composer Scott Frankel, who most recently worked on Grey Gardens, and director Michael Greif, whose credits include Rent and Grey Gardens. The production, which first ran last summer in Chicago’s Goodman Theater, received mixed reviews. New York Times critic Ben Brantley, though thoroughly dazzled by the lead performances, was not quite as taken by the show’s jumbled feminist history. Brantley calls the show’s convenient conflict between Rubinstein and Arden a “frozen diptych.”

Still, with Hamilton hysteria still very real and present, it’s safe to assume that Broadway audiences wouldn’t mind a little more historical fiction brought to stage. The show premieres on March 7 and opens on April 6. Watch a promo for the show below, find more info about the show here and buy tickets here.
