When I listen to these bare bones Tom Williams & The Boat songs, I'm struck by two thoughts.
People should never be bet on. The Vegas line for their trustworthiness and potential success should be ugly. There must be better things to waste your money on than wagering on them coming out ahead.
BUT, people must always be bet on. They are the only things that we'd like to wager our money on. We bet our lives on them - our hands and our big toes. We don't know where else to turn, but to throw our bets on the meek and the chronic losers, the spoilers, the tainted and the scared. We fall into those categories all too often and we know that we'd like to be bet on. We can't control ourselves. We're suckers for the hard-luck stories and the beaten upon rising up and getting a pie and a kiss every so often before they're stomped on and sent back to the gutter for a while.
