Amazon Green-lights Its First Half-Hour Animated Series, Undone, From BoJack Horseman Creators

On Tuesday, Amazon announced a direct-to-series order for their first half-hour animated series, Undone, from BoJack Horseman creators Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy. This marks the second series to come from the BoJack collective, with the recent announcement of Netflix’s Tuca & Bertie, starring Tiffany Haddish.

Per a press release, “Undone is a half-hour animated dramedy that explores the elastic nature of reality through its central character, Alma. After getting into a near fatal car accident, Alma discovers she has a new relationship with time and uses this ability to find out the truth about her father’s death.” Rosa Salazar (Alita: Battle Angel, The Maze Runner film series) will voice the title character, while Life in Pieces star Angelique Cabral will portray her younger sister. Other casting information is not available currently.

Purdy says in a statement, “We [Purdy and Bob-Waksberg] are grateful to Amazon Studios for the opportunity to tell Alma’s story and follow her as she seeks to find a deeper meaning to her existence.” Amazon Studios Scripted Series head Sharon Yguado echoed that sentiment by stating, “Kate and Raphael are dynamic and creative forces, and I know they will create an amazing series for us.”

The project is currently in pre-production and expected to premiere in 2019. The only sad news here is that it will only be available to Prime members once it premieres. The animated series will be produced by Michael Eisner’s Tomante Company, with Purdy, Bob-Waksberg and A Scanner Darkly’s Tommy Pallotta serving as executive producers. Fellow BoJack producers Noel Bright and Steven A. Cohen will also produce the series, while acclaimed Dutch artist Hisko Hulsing will oversee the production design and animation work of Amsterdam-based studio Submarine and Austin-based Minnow Mountain. Bob-Waksberg highlighted the series’ animation in a statement, saying, “Hisko’s beautiful artwork and masterful use of light and color will create a look never seen before on a television show that will make audiences lose their minds.”

With so many outstanding creative minds attached to this forthcoming series, Undone might shape up to be a big win for Amazon as their first animated production.
