Netflix Cancels American Vandal After Two Seasons

Netflix has canceled the true-crime mockumentary series American Vandal after two seasons, per THR.

“American Vandal will not return for a third season. We’re very grateful to the creators, writers, cast and crew for bringing their innovative comedy to Netflix, and to the fans and critics who embraced its unique and unconventional humor,” said the streaming service in a statement.

Co-creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda also executive produced the series with showrunner Dan Lagana, alongside Joe Farrell for Funny or Die and Ari Lubet, Josh Lieberman and Michael Rotenberg for 3Arts.

The first season of the unapologetically silly series debuted on Netflix in September 2017, and quickly became a streaming sensation. “American Vandal is a high-school drama inside a juvenile Funny or Die video wrapped in a “true crime” parody, filmed with such commitment to the genre it apes that it recalls Rian Johnson’s Brick,” wrote Paste’s Matt Brennan in a column on the show’s first season.

The second season premiered in September and also received positive marks in our review, although it came with less buzz and also suffered from fewer jokes.

THR sources say producers CBS TV Studios have received numerous calls to revive the series for a third season elsewhere, which may include a new home on the network’s CBS All Access streaming service.

Netflix is currently starting to streamline its original content offerings from outside studios, having also recently canceled All About the Washingtons, as well as Marvel’s Iron Fist and Luke Cage, all from ABC Studios.
