Little Witch Academia, a beloved short anime film series from Japan, is getting a full anime series adaptation, TRIGGER announced today. Little Witch Academia has had two short films made, which follow the young witch Akko as she begins training at the Little Witch Academia. Think Harry Potter, but Japanese, and with an all-female cast. The first film is 30 minutes long and is simply titled Little Witch Academia, while the second is titled Little Witch Academia: The Enchanted Parade and is an hour long. Little Witch Academia: The Enchanted Parade was Kickstarted with more than $625,000.
The Little Witch Academia series is wonderfully uplifting and its cast of young women subvert many of the sexist tropes commonly seen in anime. Up until now, it was unclear if it would continue in any form, which makes it especially wonderful to see it get a full series, though sadly there aren’t many details about the anime series yet—we don’t know how many episodes there will be or when it will release. However, the director of the two films, Yoh Yoshinari, will be returning to direct the series. We can’t wait to watch it when it comes out.
