Ruby Rose Cast as The CW’s Batwoman

Last month, The CW announced that Batwoman may be joining the ranks of the network’s army of superheroes during a December crossover event between Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl, and it was an exciting update on multiple fronts. Not only would Batwoman be the first openly LGBTQ+ superhero on television, but by introducing her into the network’s existing superhero universe, The CW had taken the first step in developing a stand-alone Batwoman series. Now, that excitement has skyrocketed with the announcement that model and actor Ruby Rose has been cast in the role.

Rose will play Gotham’s Kate Kane. According to the network’s official logline, Kane’s alter-ego Batwoman is “an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence.” Even though Gotham is desperate for a hero, Kane is a reluctant one: Before she can save the city, she has her own demons to fight.

Best known for her supporting role in the third season of Orange is the New Black, Rose has also appeared in John Wick: Chapter 2 and Pitch Perfect 3. The Australian actor is openly gay and identifies as gender fluid; she’ll next appear in the giant shark thriller and non-documentary The Meg.

Caroline Dries (Vampire Diaries) will script the new Batwoman series in addition to acting as executive producer with Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns and Arrowverse architect Greg Berlanti.

Unfortunately, the soonest we’ll see a Batwoman series is the 2019-2020 season, but Rose’s appearance in The CW’s December crossover episode should tide diehard fans over until then. Check back for further updates as development on the new series continues.
