Matthew Perry Tells BBC That He Can’t Remember Filming Three Seasons of Friends

We’ve known for some time that Matthew Perry had a pretty serious drug problem during his time as Chandler Bing on the hit sitcom Friends, but until now, we didn’t know the extent. In a radio interview with BBC2 about his playwriting debut (The End of Longing), Perry was asked if he could name his least favorite Friends episode.

“I think the answer is, I don’t remember three years of it,” the actor said. “So none of those … Somewhere between season three and six … I was a little out of it.”

According to his interview with People in 2013, Perry struggled with an alcohol and pills addiction—specifically Vicodin—while making $1 million per episode on Friends. Perry, who is now 46, is now sober, and even turned his beach home in Malibu into a sober living facility. Additionally, he’s an advocate for drug courts, which emphasizes treatment over jail time for substance abuse offenses.

The End of Longing debuts in London at the Playhouse Theatre on Feb. 2.
