Martin Donovan Books Key Recurring Role on Big Little Lies Season Two

The cast continues to grow for the much-anticipated second season of Big Little Lies, as Weeds and Ant-Man star Martin Donovan has been cast as Martin Howard, the father to Zoe Kravitz’s Bonnie, THR reports. Additional character information is being kept under wraps for now.

Donovan will star alongside Crystal Fox—best known for her role in the television series In the Heat of the Night, which ran from 1989 to 1995—who plays Bonnie’s mother, Elizabeth Howard. Donovan is the latest to board the series after the recent casting announcements of Douglas Smith (The Alienist, Miss Sloan, Big Love), Mo McRae (Den of Thieves, The First Purge) and, of course, Meryl Streep.

As for the new casting additions, we know Streep will play Mary Louise Wright, the mother to Alexander Skarsgard’s Perry Wright. Mary Louise worries for her grandchildren, but also desperately searches for answers about her son. Smith will play Corey Brockfield, one of Jane’s (Shailene Woodley) co-workers and an aspiring marine biologist. McRae will play the children’s second grade teacher at Otter Bay Elementary, Michael Perkins. Oscar-winning director Andrea Arnold will replace Jean-Marc Vallée in directing all seven episodes and according to THR, the cast will all be receiving major salary bumps.

Production is already underway as several of the show’s stars, including Laura Dern and Nicole Kidman, have revealed set photos on their social media accounts. What we know so far is that the series is set to return in 2019, with just about all of the main cast returning, even Skarsgard—and if he had his way, Robert De Niro would join the cast, as well. The new season will dive deeper into the lives of Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Celeste (Kidman), Renata (Dern), Jane and Bonnie as relationships and loyalties will come under fire.
