Black Mirror Creator Charlie Brooker Says Season Five Has Been Pushed Back

Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker has confirmed that the fifth season of the hit sci-fi anthology series has been pushed back. In an interview with THR, Brooker explained how the intricate production process on Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, the series’ newly released Netflix interactive film, pushed back the show’s forthcoming fifth season.

Brooker told THR that making Bandersnatch was the equivalent of making four episodes of the main series, rather than two, as he had anticipated.

“We knew going into it that it would be difficult and challenging and more complicated than a normal film that we would do. Even then, we underestimated,” Brooker said. “As the story expanded, I like to say that the story got longer and it got wider. So the whole thing started expanding a bit like an inflatable life raft in a small room.”

The interview also confirms that Bandersnatch will serve as a standalone film, separate from the events of Black Mirror’s forthcoming fifth season.

Netflix has confirmed that Black Mirror season five will premiere sometime in 2019, although it has not yet announced an official return date. Stay tuned for more on the show’s new season.
