Check Out Hulu’s New Movies and TV for October

TV Features

I recently wrote a piece killing Hulu for their weird price hike, and while I still think it’s weird that they’re charging more than Netflix and Amazon Prime, I have to admit that I’ve been proven wrong on the quality of their content. With the addition of every Criterion Collection film, which is enormous, and an impressive number of new offerings each month, Hulu is now competitive with those streaming services, and awfully close to standing on equal ground. It will probably only get better for Hulu, considering they have the money and influence of several major media corporations behind them.

October is no different—Hulu is bringing us a ton of new movies and TV shows, including a top-notch romcom satire, one of the best spy movies of all-time, stand-up specials, and a Woody Allen classic. Check out our featured recommendations, and read on for the full list of this month’s new offerings.

They Came Together.jpgThey Came Together
Year: 2014
Director: David Wain
Available: Oct. 1
When you have a cast led by Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler, you’re off to a good start. They Came Together is a parody that takes the guise of an actual romantic comedy, in order to comment on them and lampoon them. The film is silly and stupid, but in a delightful, funny way. If you have even the slightest knowledge of romantic comedies (and you probably do, mostly because you are a person in the world), you can appreciate what’s going on here. —Chris Morgan

Patton_Oswalt_Tragedy_Plus_Comedy_Equals_Time_posters_381020.jpgPatton Oswalt: Tragedy Plus Comedy Equals Time
Year: 2014
Star: Patton Oswalt
Available: Oct. 1
The comedian serves himself best in the middle part of the special. He hits his stride as he imagines offing himself in front of a display of Lean Cuisine meals while Toto’s “Africa” plays over the system, and his incredible experience performing for 400 drunk casino patrons that apparently involve him responding positively as people yelled listings from his iMDB profile to him…even Oswalt’s weakest material runs circles around the palaver of the hundreds of hacks on television and in clubs on any given night. —Robert Ham

Hannah_and_her_sisters.jpgHannah and Her Sisters
Year: 1986
Director: Woody Allen
Available: Oct. 1
The intellect is the decoration, but the pain is the essence—for all his neuroses, humorous and otherwise, Woody Allen understood what it meant to experience a deep, unrelenting sadness, and he conveyed it on film like nobody else. On the surface, this is the story of a family in Allen’s New York milieu who experience a great deal of drama and resentment over a two-year period, complete with affairs and betrayals and suicide attempts. Again, though, there’s an astute exploration of love and rejection happening in the spaces between. —Shane Ryan

a-most-wanted-man-poster-20140121.jpgA Most Wanted Man
Year: 2014
Director: Anton Corbijn
Available: Oct. 1
This is Corbijn’s most ambitious project—his debut was the quite fine Ian Curtis biopic Control—and he does an excellent job of provoking steely performances from a large cast. This is some of McAdams’ best work in far too long—tough and compassionate at the same time—and even an old pro like Dafoe seems to be reaching down a little deeper to produce something memorable. A Most Wanted Man may be less flashy in design than Corbijn’s first two films, but in its place is a terrific sense of bitter resignation that seeps through every frame. —Tim Grierson
