Game of Thrones Season Eight Episode Runtimes Revealed

HBO has revealed the runtimes for the six-part final season of Game of Thrones, and they might as well turn the series into a film franchise at this point. All but two episodes are set to be near-feature-length, with runtimes well over the 60-minute mark. The first two episodes come close as well, clocking in at 54 minutes and 58 minutes long.

Of particular interest is the third episode, which will be the longest episode of the series at one hour and 22 minutes. This is the episode that fans have speculated to be the Battle of Winterfell, the epic showdown between the Army of the Dead and the forces of the living at Winterfell that has been the focus of much of the preseason marketing push. The episode is directed by Miguel Sapochnik, who has been at the helm of many of the big battle set-pieces in the series thus far, including “Hardhome” and “Battle of the Bastards,” the latter of which won him a Primetime Emmy award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series. If the Battle of Winterfell occupies the entire episode, it will beat out the Battle of Helms Deep in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers as the longest continuous battle scene ever filmed, according to ScreenRant.

The fourth episode of the season will run for an hour and 18 minutes, and the final two episodes will each run for an hour and 20 minutes. All together, the final season is only eight minutes shorter than season seven, despite being just six episodes long.

The final season of Game of Thrones premieres on HBO at 9 p.m. ET on April 14. Check out the full list of runtimes, as well as the trailer for the final season below.
