New on Hulu: All the Movies and TV Coming in January

Hulu is feeling the holiday spirit, giving subscribers a fresh batch of new television and film titles to look forward to when January rolls around. If you’re the type to shake your presents ahead of time, you’ll want to get up to speed on everything the streamer has in store via the breakdown below.

The brightest January highlights are on the small screen, where Hulu is making both licensed and original additions worth taking notice of (and watching). The biggest get of all is FX’s Justified: Complete Series (Jan. 19, 2020), the Elmore Leonard-inspired crime drama we recently ranked among the best shows of the decade. Timothy Olyphant stars as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, who’s reassigned from Miami to his childhood home in the poor, rural coal mining towns of eastern Kentucky. Created by Graham Yost, Justified earned a sterling critical reputation during its 2010-2015 run, and soon Hulu users can see what all the hubbub was about. Speaking of critical darlings, we also have Season 2 of AMC’s Lodge 49, a Paste favorite we recently praised as “an unhurried meditation and a quirky delight,” not to mention one of 2019’s best TV series. Sadly, the second installment of the “modern-day fable,” starring Wyatt Russell as the disarmingly optimistic Dud, is also the last—the show fell prey to Peak TV in October. You truly don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone, but at least we’ll soon have Lodge 49’s two seasons to enjoy on Hulu. And still another critically acclaimed series returning for its sophomore installment is Hulu comedy Shrill (Jan. 24, 2020), starring Saturday Night Live’s Aidy Bryant as Annie, a fat young woman who wants to change her life, but not her body. We recently called Shrill “a delight” in deeming it one of 2019’s best shows, so don’t miss Season 2, in which Annie continues to get a feel for wielding her newfound self-confidence. The complete sixth and seventh seasons of Showtime’s Homeland (Jan. 10, 2020), the complete third season of IFC’s Brockmire (Jan. 1, 2020), and the complete series of Damages and Rescue Me (Jan. 1, 2020) round out Hulu’s incoming TV offerings.

Film buffs have a good bit to look forward to in January, as well, such as the final film of a cinematic master: Eyes Wide Shut (Jan. 1, 2020), Stanley Kubrick’s seductive thriller starring a then-married Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as Dr. Bill Harford and his wife Alice, respectively—Alice’s admission that she considered having an affair sends the good doctor out into the snowy streets and dark, dreamlike corners (lit almost exclusively by holiday lights—Eyes Wide Shut is a Christmas movie!) of New York City, where he soon finds himself wrapped up in a shadowy and sexy conspiracy. That film arrives on the first of the year, as do a multitude of Star Trek motion pictures, including Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989), Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) and Star Trek: Insurrection (1998), as well as classic crime drama The French Connection and the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring Blood Diamond. There are other titles trickling in as the month goes on, as well, including Bill Hader/Kristen Wiig two-hander The Skeleton Twins (Jan. 17, 2020), Stephen Merchant’s 2019 wrestling dramedy Fighting with My Family (Jan. 30, 2020) and more. And Hulu users with subscriptions to Starz, HBO and Showtime can access those streaming libraries using the corresponding add-ons—scroll down to see what’s in those pipelines.

We’ll wrap up with a quick note on Hulu’s departing titles for the coming month: Fortunately, there’s very little leaving, save David O. Russell’s quirky I Heart Huckabees, the original Shrek, 2005’s Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, raunchy restaurant comedy Waiting…, Jimmy Fallon/Drew Barrymore rom-com Fever Pitch and, in case you’re morbidly curious, Josh Trank’s attempted Fantastic Four.
