Lena Waithe to Executive Produce New Comedy for HBO Starring Kid Fury

Let’s keep it brief: Lena Waithe’s having a good year. After she ripped our hearts out and subsequently won a historic Emmy for the Thanksgiving episode of Master of None she wrote in 2017, Waithe would go on to create the Showtime series The Chi, and in February, TBS ordered a pilot for her “queer black girl” comedy Twenties. Now, to maintain that momentum, Waithe will executive produce a new comedy for HBO starring podcaster and comedian Kid Fury.

The as-yet-untitled project, as Variety reports, will star Kid Fury as Greg, a sarcastic gay man in his 20s struggling to navigate New York life and the challenges of clinical depression.

Kid Fury, himself a gay man, hosts the popular podcast The Read with Crissle West. On the podcast, the friends discuss sexuality, inclusion and race in pop culture via segments like “Black Excellence” and fan-favorite “Bitch, You Guessed It!” Besides starring in the new HBO series, Kid Fury will serve as writer and co-executive producer to boot.

In addition to her other projects, production has begun on Waithe’s script for romantic drama Queen & Slim, starring Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya. She will also executive produce THEM, a horror-anthology series from Amazon that’s already been confirmed for two seasons.

Stay tuned for further updates on the new HBO comedy as pre-production continues.
