Falcon-Winter Soldier Limited Series in Development at Disney

A new limited series is in development for Disney’s forthcoming streaming service, teaming up Captain America heroes Falcon and Winter Soldier, per Variety. Empire producer Malcolm Spellman has been tapped to write the Disney service-exclusive series, making him the first credited writer on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s proposed television slate.

The news follows reports from September that revealed Disney’s plans to populate its forthcoming streaming service with MCU secondary characters who haven’t yet gotten their own standalone film franchises, including Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston).

The news also comes after the recent cancellations of two of Netflix’s rival Marvel Television shows Luke Cage and Iron Fist, both of which completed their second and final seasons this year. Netflix launched the third season of Daredevil earlier this month, and has ordered a third season of Jessica Jones, as well as a second season of The Punisher.

The Falcon-Winter Soldier series will find Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, respectively, reprising their roles from the Captain America and Avengers films. The forthcoming Disney service shows, as with the MCU film installments, will be produced by Marvel Studios, and are expected to sport bigger budgets than most television projects.

Disney’s streaming service is expected to launch in fall 2019, with an ambitious development slate that includes the Marvel shows as well as the live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian, the latter of which recently started production.
