Netflix has released a new trailer for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the streaming giant’s iteration of the Archie Horror comic character’s origin story.
The trailer opens with Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) and boyfriend Harvey (Ross Lynch) saying goodbye post-date as Shipka’s voiceover spells out the premise of the series.
“In the town of Greendale, where it always feels like Halloween, there lived a girl who was half-witch, half-mortal, who, on her sixteenth birthday, would have to choose between two worlds,” says Shipka. “And that girl is me.”
There’s a quick shot of Shipka’s gown transforming from white to black before the trailer erupts in chaos, ensuring that the days of Sabrina the Teenage Witch are long gone. With a montage featuring clips of blood rituals, demonic monsters, pentagrams, bodies rising from the grave and, of course, teenage parties, it’s clear that Netflix is upping the creep factor for the new show. Considering the platform has described the series as “tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist,” this isn’t entirely unexpected.
“I’m not an evil person,” explains Shipka as her character forms a witchy girl-gang to fight some unknown terror. “But these are desperate times.”
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was written by Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who also serves as executive producer along with Greg Berlanti and Scarah Schechter (also from Riverdale), Jon Goldwater (CEO of Archie Comics) and Lee Toland Krieger. It will be released by Berlanti Productions, based out of Warner Bros. Television, on Oct. 26.
