The 5 New TV Shows You Can’t Miss This Month

A new year brings a whole slate of new TV shows, so here’s hoping your New Year’s resolution wasn’t to watch less TV.

We here at Paste will be all over Good Trouble on Freeform, Showtime’s Black Monday, and the highly anticipated re-imagining of Carmen Sandiego on Netflix. We can’t wait for the return of our beloved Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which moves to NBC on January 10. And there’s no way we would miss talking about Rent, TV’s next live musical, or The CW’s Roswell, New Mexico, TV’s latest remake.

As always, though, we don’t want you to miss out on any TV. So here are the five new shows you can’t miss this month.

1. Schooled
Executive Producers: Adam F. Goldberg, Doug Robinson and Marc Firek
Stars: Tim Meadows, Bryan Callen, AJ Michalka and Brett Dier
Premiere Date: January 9 at 8:31 p.m. on ABC

The Goldbergs gets its long-awaited spin-off in this comedy, which follows Lainey Lewis (AJ Michalka) into the 1990s as she becomes the music teacher at her old alma matter, William Penn Academy—where Coach Mellor (Bryan Callen) is still bringing his unique blend of terror/encouragement to physical education and Mr. Glascott (Tim Meadows) is now the principal. As he does with The Goldbergs, executive producer Adam Goldberg mines nostalgia for humor while telling heartfelt stories that resonate. This could be a spin-off that works.

2. Fam
Executive Producers: Corinne Kingsbury, Aaron Kaplan, Wendi Trilling, and Dana Honor
Stars: Nina Dobrev, Tone Bell, Odessa Adlon, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Brian Stokes Mitchell
Premiere Date: January 10 at 9:30 p.m. on CBS

Yes, this is on CBS. And yes, it’s about a newly engaged woman named Clem (Nina Dobrev) who has struggled to build a nice normal life with her fiancé, Nick (Tone Bell). All of it falls apart when her 16-year-old half-sister, Shannon, moves in with them. Sounds like your typical CBS comedy. But get this: Shannon is played by Odessa Adlon, the daughter of Better Things’ Pamela Adlon. The younger Adlon looks (and sounds!) so much like her mom, and also brings the same unconventional humor to the role. Add in Gary Cole as Clem and Shannon’s dad and suddenly this CBS comedy is looking like much more than the standard fare.

3. Valley of the Boom
Executive Producers: Matthew Carnahan and Arianna Huffington
Stars: Bradley Whitford, Steve Zahn, Lamorne Morris, John Karna, Dakota Shapiro and Oliver Cooper
Premiere Date: January 13 at 8 p.m. on National Georaphic Channel

Netscape. AOL. Blackberry. MySpace. The digital highway is littered with technology companies that once led the industry, only to be overtaken by competitors. We take for granted now that we can email someone at any time. That our phones will give us directions, count the number of steps we take, and pay for our coffee. But all of that really has come to fruition in the last decade. This six-part miniseries follows the rise and fall of Netscape and intersperses scripted drama with interviews with the real-life people who lived through this tumultuous time, including Arianna Huffington and Mark Cuban.

4. The Passage
Executive Producers: Ridley Scott and Matt Reeves
Stars: Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Saniyya Sidney, Jamie McShane, Caroline Chikezie, Emmanuelle Chriqui and Henry Ian Cusick
Premiere Date: January 14 at 9 p.m. on Fox

Ten-year-old foster child Amy (Saniyya Sidney) is chosen as a test subject for Project Noah, a mysterious and top secret government venture. Mark-Paul Gosselaar is the FBI agent assigned to bring her in until he decides he won’t be part of this nefarious undertaking anymore. The show is a mixture of an ongoing mystery and horror, but the real reason to tune in is to watch Gosselaar and Sidney together. The two form a believable pair you can’t help but root for.

5. The Other Two
Executive Producers: Lorne Michaels, Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider
Stars: Drew Tarver, Helene York, Case Walker, Ken Marino and Molly Shannon
Premiere Date: January 24 at 10:30 p.m. on Comedy Central

What if you’ve been struggling for years to be launch your career in the entertainment industry and suddenly your youngest brother becomes the next Justin Bieber? That’s exactly what happens to Cary (Drew Tarver) and Brooke (Helene York), who must deal with the fact that their brother, Chase (Case Walker), becomes a huge Internet star overnight. Molly Shannon co-stars as their mom, who might only be proud of her one of her children. Executive producers Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider are both former head writers of Saturday Night Live and guest stars include Beck Bennett, Michael Che, and Andy Cohen.
