The 5 New TV Shows You Can’t Miss This Month

What is with this month?

That’s what Paste TV Editor Matt Brennan and I have been wondering. There. Is. So. Much. TV. In. June. I mean, when the season finale of Killing Eve—the spring ’s biggest surprise hit—airs over Memorial Day weekend, you know TV is taking no prisoners. You want to be a TV fan? You better close those curtains, pick up that remote and start watching.

We will be covering a lot this month, from the return of Younger, Luke Cage, GLOW and The Bold Type to the highly anticipated series premieres of Dietland and Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger.

But, as always, we didn’t want you to miss a thing, so here are the five new shows you can’t miss this June.

1. Pose
Executive Producers: Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Alexis Martin Woodall and Sherry Marsh
Stars: Mj Rodriguez, Dominique Jackson, Indya Moore, Hailie Sahar, Angelica Ross, Evan Peters, Kate Mara, James Van Der Beek, Billy Porter, Charlayne Woodard, Ryan Jamaal Swain, Dyllón Burnside and Angel Bismark Curiel
Premiere Date: June 3 at 9 p.m. on FX

Strike a pose. The setting is 1987 and Pose boasts the largest cast of transgender actors in series regular roles and the largest recurring cast of LGBTQ actors ever for a scripted series. That’s great for TV, as we must demand that our favorite medium continue to reflect the world that we live in. But Pose is more than its groundbreaking casting. In many ways, the drama returns Murphy to his Glee roots: It’s about a group of people finding a place where they fit in and can put their talents to work. Broadway star Billy Porter (remember his great Tony acceptance speech in 2013?) stars as Pray Tell, the emcee of the balls where voguing is the only thing that matters. And keep an eye out for James Van Der Beek, who continues to make great career choices.

2. Succession
Executive Producers: Jesse Armstrong, Adam McKay, Frank Rich, Kevin Messick, Will Ferrell, Jane Tranter and Mark Mylod
Stars: Brian Cox, Hiam Abbass, Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, and Alan Ruck
Premiere Date: June 3 at 10 p.m. on HBO

Logan Roy (Brian Cox) is a media giant. His Waystar Royco company owns newspapers, TV stations, digital media, you name it. On his 80th birthday, the family is ready for him to pass the company on to his children. However, Logan isn’t quite ready to give up his day job. Sibling infighting ensues as the struggle to keep the business within the family becomes more and more complicated. Is the story inspired by Rupert Murdoch? You tell us.

3. Strange Angel
Executive Producers: Mark Heyman, David DiGilio, Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker and David Lowery
Stars: Jack Reynor, Rupert Friend, Bella Heathcote, Peter Mark Kendall, Michael Gaston, Greg Wise, Rade Šerbedžija, Zack Pearlman, and Keye Chen
Premiere Date: Thursday, June 14 on CBS All Access

Mostly, I’m happy to see Rupert Friend again. I’ve missed him ever since his tragic demise on Homeland. Here, Friend stars as Ernest Donovan, a man living in Los Angeles in the 1930s. Donovan brings Jack Parsons (Jack Reynor) into a new religion/sex magick cult that encourages its followers to, well, do whatever they want. Parsons went on to discover what we know today as rocket science. But the big question is, will this series help CBS All Access gain more subscribers?

4. Yellowstone
Executive Producers: Taylor Sheridan, Kevin Costner, John Linson, Art Linson, and David C. Glasser
Stars: Kevin Costner, Wes Bentley, Kelly Reilly, Luke Grimes, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, Dave Annable, Danny Huston, Gil Birmingham, Josh Lucas, Jefferson White, Gretchen Mol, Jill Hennessey, Patrick St. Esprit, Ian Bohen, Heather Hemmons, Denim Richards, and Michael Nouri
Premiere Date: June 20 at 9 p.m. on the Paramount Network

Filmed on location in Utah and Montana, this dramatic series from the fledging Paramount Network (the artist formerly known as Spike) follows a family of ranchers who’ve been tending to the land for six generations. Led by patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner), the family must fend off developers who want to mine their land for oil and lumber. Dave Annabele stars as the son who’s stood by his father and is ready to take over the family business, while Wes Bentley is the son always desperate for his dad’s approval.

5. Take Two
Executive Producers: Terri Edda Miller and Andrew W. Marlowe
Stars: Rachel Bilson, Eddie Cibrian, Xavier de Guzman, Aliyah O’Brien and Alice Lee
Premiere Date: June 21 at 10 p.m. on ABC

Rachel Bilson is Sam Swift, a former TV star who played a cop on a hit show before her very public breakdown. Wanting to restart her career, Sam convinces private detective Eddie Valetik (Eddie Cibrian) to let her shadow him. Sounds a lot like Castle, doesn’t it? It should. It’s from Castle creators and executive producers Terri Edda Miller and Andrew W. Marlowe. It also reminds me a little of Moonlighting or Remington Steele. And that’s OK. Summertime is the perfect time for a fun, fluffy show. I dismissed Castle when it first premiered. I won’t make that mistake again.
