New on Showtime: All the Movies and TV Coming in January

If your New Year’s resolution is to watch more Showtime in 2018, then you’re in luck. The pay-cable channel is making some exciting moves in January, including the debut of a much-anticipated new TV series, the season finale of a long-running fan favorite, the addition of a number of high-profile feature films and much more. This time, you just might have a shot at keeping your (oddly specific and not particularly ambitious) resolution through February.

If there’s one January addition on Showtime we’re revved up about, it’s the debut of Lena Waithe’s (Master of None) The Chi, an hourlong drama that “explores the humanity behind the headlines sensationalizing the South Side of Chicago.” The series, produced entirely in its namesake city, stars Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton), Jacob Latimore (Sleight), Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (Queen of Katwe), Alex Hibbert (Moonlight), Yolonda Ross (Treme, The Get Down), Armando Riesco (Bull), Tiffany Boone (The Following), Sonja Sohn (The Wire), Jahking Guillory (Kicks) and Steven Williams (The Leftovers). Emmy winner Waithe is the show’s creator and executive producer, while Academy Award, Emmy and Golden Globe winner Common (Selma) also serves as an executive producer and Elwood Reid (The Bridge, Hawaii Five-O) serves as showrunner. The Chi premieres on Showtime Sunday, Jan. 7 at 10 p.m. EST/PST—Dope director Rick Famuyiwa helmed the first episode.

Also noteworthy in the television department is the eighth season of award-winning original series Shameless, set to conclude next month. Per Showtime, the latest season of the long-running dramedy “finds the Gallaghers on an upswing” as “Frank (Oscar nominee and Emmy and SAG Award winner William H. Macy) has come out of a drug-induced haze and decided it’s finally time to be a contributing member of society.” Meanwhile, “Fiona (Golden Globe nominee Emmy Rossum) faces hard decisions when she discovers her success as a landlord might mean someone else’s misfortune.” New episodes of Shameless will continue to air on Sunday nights at 9 p.m. EST/PST up until the show’s season finale on Jan. 28.

Where feature film lovers are concerned, Showtime’s January slate is looking rock-solid. The first of the year brings Russell Crowe-led savant drama A Beautiful Mind, Steve Martin/Eddie Murphy comedy Bowfinger, Mike Nichols’ acclaimed Charlie Wilson’s War, Kurt Russell-starring sports classic Miracle, Frank Darabont’s Stephen King adaptation The Mist, the first five Rocky movies, Cameron Crowe’s surreal Vanilla Sky and 2016 tearjerker The Light Between Oceans, starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander. Following later in the month are Emily Blunt-starring thriller The Girl on the Train on Jan. 13, Terry Gilliam’s bizarre The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (featuring the late, great Heath Ledger’s final performance) on Jan. 15 and Tomas Alfredson’s acclaimed John le Carré adaptation Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, starring Gary Oldman and every other English actor whose work you’ve ever enjoyed, on Jan. 16.

Lastly, Showtime is adding a couple of eye-catching documentaries and streaming collections in January, including a Rolling Stones concert film and a comedy special hosted by NFL star Rob Gronkowski, as well as movie collections dedicated to Nicole Kidman, Philip Seymour Hoffman, boxing, murder mysteries and more.

See the complete list of Showtime’s January additions below, and have a happy new year.
