Premiering at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, the first trailer for the long-awaited Snowpiercer TV series has been revealed.
The series is based on Bong Joon-ho’s 2013 dystopian film of the same name, which was based on the graphic novel La Transperceneige from Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand and Jean-Marc Rochette. The film stars Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Ed Harris, Octavia Spencer and Jamie Bell. The film and its forthcoming series adaptation detail a post-apocalyptic future where the world has become uninhabitable, leading to life on a continuously moving train that circles the frozen globe. Having lived like this for several years, the passengers’ class divisions begin to crack, and they create disarray and a bubbling revolution among the crowded train.
In the series adaptation, Hamilton’s Daveed Diggs is portraying Evans’ character of a lower-class citizen who leads the revolution, while Jennifer Connelly (Alita: Battle Angel) acts as the head of hospitality on the train, i.e. the Swinton character.
Alongside Diggs and Connelly, the series stars Alison Wright (The Americans), Mickey Sumner (Frances Ha), Susan Park (Fargo) and Steven Ogg (Westworld), among others. The show is helmed by Orphan Black’s Graeme Manson after Josh Friedman left the project over creative differences.
The trailer shows both the glamour and horror of living on the train, with Connelly representing the upper class and Diggs representing the lower. Including greed, love, a bit of glamour and more than a bit of blood, the trailer gives a glimpse into the dystopia of Snowpiercer’s world.
The series was initially ordered by TNT in 2016, and the series has since been slated for a spring 2020 release on TNT’s sister channel TBS, making it the channel’s first foray into dramatic television. Though the first season hasn’t even aired yet, a second season of the series was ordered back in May.
