Watch The First Official Trailer for Bryan Singer’s New X-Men Series, The Gifted

Fox has finally unveiled its first official trailer for forthcoming X-Men series The Gifted. The show will reportedly will fit somewhere inside the X-Men universe’s convoluted timeline. Given that one of the characters in the trailer claims she’s unsure if the X-Men are a real thing anymore, the film likely takes place before this year’s acclaimed Logan.

The Gifted follows the Strucker family as the two kids come to grips with their mutant abilities. Naturally, the government—less than thrilled about their ability to blow up high school locker rooms and steal generic-brand popcorn straight from the vending machine—is in hot pursuit of the little family. The parents evidently have no powers, although the father is a district attorney who has “put away” mutants in the past.

The official announcement from Fox states:

Family adventure series The Gifted, from 20th Century Fox Television in association with Marvel Television, tells the story of a suburban couple whose ordinary lives are rocked by the sudden discovery that their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.

The trailer largely involves the family—as well as notable mutants such as Polaris and Days of Future Past’s Blink—booking it away from suits with earpieces and creepy robot spiders. Why any real mutant would need to fear a spider, robot or otherwise, is one of the many questions the show will attempt to address when it releases later this year.

The series is written by Burn Notice’s Matt Nix and directed by X-Men veteran Bryan Singer.
