Netflix’s The Witcher Series Adaptation Has Found Its Leading Women

In the beginning of September, it was revealed that Henry Cavill had been chosen to play the beloved “white wolf” monster slayer, Geralt of Rivia, in Netflix’s adaptation of The Witcher, a series of novels written by Andrzej Sapkowski that was also adapted into CD Projekt Red’s best-selling videogame franchise. A month later, we now know that the leading ladies, Ciri and Yennefer of Vengerberg, have also been cast.

Freya Allan (The War of the Worlds, Into The Badlands) will star as Ciri, whom many fans argue to be the true protagonist of the series, and Anya Chalotra (The ABC Murders, Wanderlust) will play the role of the sorceress Yennefer, who is Geralt’s love interest and Ciri’s mother figure, and yet so much more. Cavill, Allan and Chalotra will be joined by Jodhi May (Game of Thrones, Genius) as Queen Calanthe, Bjorn Hlynur Haraldsson (Fortitude) as knight Eist, Adam Levy (Knightfall, Snatch) as druid Mousesack, MyAnna Buring as Aretuza magical academy head Tissaia, Mimi Ndiweni and Therica Wilson-Read as novice sorcerers, and Millie Brady as outcast Princess Renfri, per THR.

Following the casting news, The Witcher showrunner and executive producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich tweeted, “I couldn’t be more thrilled about our ever-growing #Witcher family. Anya, Freya, and the rest of this jaw-dropping cast will slay monsters, your hearts, and everything else we put in front of them.” In a follow-up tweet, she added, “A huge shout-out to @SophHollandCast @FinnianTweed and @fayetimby, who collectively have only slept ten hours since I hired them in June. Their tireless efforts, enthusiasm, patience for all my ‘helpful thoughts,’ and unabashed love for this show make them a #Witcher DREAM TEAM.”

Alongside Hissrich are: executive producer Alik Sakharov (House of Cards, Game of Thrones), who is set to direct four episodes, including the pilot; Alex Garcia Lopez (Netflix’s Luke Cage, Daredevil); and Charlotte Brandstrom (Starz’s Outlander, Counterpart). The latter two will each direct two episodes.
