FX Orders Pilot Based on Acclaimed Sci-Fi Comic Series Y: The Last Man

FX has ordered a TV pilot titled Y, based on the acclaimed sci-fi comic book series Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra.

The news was announced on Thursday by Eric Schrier and Nick Grad, Presidents of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions. Melina Matsoukas (Insecure, Master of None) will direct the pilot, which will be produced by FX Productions.

Oscar nominee Michael Green (American Gods, Blade Runner 2049, Logan) and Aida Mashaka Croal (Luke Cage, Turn) will serve as co-showrunners and will be executive producers along with Matsoukas, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force (American Crime Story, Pose, The Hunger Games) and Vaughan, who have been working together to develop the series.

The Vertigo comic book series explores a post-apocalyptic world where all men have died … except one. The TV pilot will “traverse a world of women—exploring gender, race, class and survival,” per a press release.

Y: The Last Man ran for 60 issues and was first published in 2002. It won three Eisner Awards and the first Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story for Y: The Last Man, Volume 10. Paste listed the series among the best graphic novels of the decade back in 2009, calling it “intelligent, post-apocalyptic storytelling at its best,” and we highlighted it again in our 2015 piece on the 15 best Vertigo titles of the past 15 years, praising it as “a serious contender for best comic series of the new millennium.”
