It was in the early 2000s — a time where some bands still weren’t completely pasted all over the internet — that one of my best friends went to see Pinback for the first time. He had every track he could get his hands on, but he’d only known them from listening to burned, coverless CD-Rs; there weren’t websites like MySpace or Facebook, and popular magazines weren’t covering the band. To him, the members of Pinback were as faceless as Gorillaz or KISS in the ‘70s. read more

Brooklyn Vegan reports that John David Schardt, a filmmaker from Los Angeles has started a Kickstarter campaign to fund a documentary about Pinback, the San Diego band fronted by Rob Crow and Armistead Burwell Smith IV. Pinback, who has been touring behind Autumn of the Seraphs since 2007 and have been releasing singles in a series called “Information Retrieved” this year. read more

It's hard to nail down exactly what type of music Pinback plays (too complex for indie rock, too self-aware for prog) but to the sold-out crown at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on Sept. 27, it was clear that Pinback is a straight-up rock band, first and foremost. The night's closing tune even featured a moment of which the dudes of Spinal Tap would be proud: Bringing out opener Kylesa, the two bands performed an epic rendition of “June” with no less than four guitarists, four bassists and two drummers.... read more
