Update: Bewley passed away shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday evening. Our hearts go out his family. He will be missed.--According to Pylon's Facebook page, guitarist Randy Bewley suffered a heart attack while driving on Monday night and was rushed off to the ICU. In an e-mail to Creative Loafing, vocalist Vanessa Hay wrote "His van drifted off the road and tipped over. No other people or vehicles were involved. [Above: Jared Swilley of the Black Lips plays in Halloween-appropriate band The Spooks.]More good bands than Bonnaroo. The release of a long-awaited record. A 3-D extravaganza. A horde of crazed Danes. A theremin. A cassette so limited it doesn’t really exist. The Black Lips wearing bed sheets. And Jay Reatard playing (gasp) an acoustic guitar. It’s just another Halloween in Atlanta, as Deerhunter headed a line-up of hipster-approved indie rockers at the Variety Playhouse, while Black Lips side-project The Spooks descended upon the after-party at Star Bar, supported by a cadre of local bands and the aforementioned Danes.... read more

Having just released its 1980 debut, Gyrate, on CD for the first time, Pylon is poised to distribute cool points like hotcakes around the eastern seaboard via a handful of early-November tour dates with The New Sound of Numbers. Show up, accrue +5 in your Athens-related hipness stats, and honor the town’s alternative forefathers by dancing a little bit. It all begins tonight in Atlanta, and winds up next weekend in Philadelphia. That Liberty Bell could use another shaking up. The dates: November 1 - Atlanta, Ga. @ The Earl 5 - Chapel Hill, N.C. @ Local 506 7 -... read more

Pylon's website says it all - "Cool" - in the same bold, squared-off letters that adorned its seminal 7-inch single in 1980. Although the Athens, Ga. dance-punk four-piece never found the commercial success of fellow Classic City compatriots R.E.M. and the B-52s, the band laid the foundations of its hometown's renowned music scene and -- like the traffic cone of its logo -- helped re-direct rock to an alternative route, if you will. This October, Pylon will bring this hipness back to CDs when DFA Records releases its out-of-print debut album, Gyrate, in said format for the first time ever.... read more
