Garry Shandling: 1949-2016 – Legendary Comedian, Larry Sanders Show Star

Comedy News

Update, 5:46 p.m.: Judd Apatow has released a statement about Shandling, saying, “Garry would see the ridiculousness of me being asked to sum up his life five minutes after being told of his passing. It is a perfect, ridiculous Larry Sanders moment. I can imagine how Hank would handle it but I just don’t know how to sum up someone I loved so much who taught me everything I know and was always so kind to me. I am just too sad. Maybe tomorrow I will do better.”

Garry Shandling, the actor, comedian and star of The Larry Sanders Show and It’s Garry Shandling’s Show, has died at 66, TMZ reports. Most recently seen as Senator Stern in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shandling is a comedic legend and frequent Tonight Show With Johnny Carson guest host who helped redefine sitcoms in the 1980s and 1990s. According to Variety, police have said that Shandling’s death was a result of a “medical emergency.” We’ll have more information as it’s released.
