As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Clueless, it seems exceptionally fitting that its star, Alicia Silverstone, is getting ready to return to our screens in a brand new kind of role, playing the lead in Acorn TV’s forthcoming crime drama Irish Blood

The latest entry in the streamer’s stable of cozy mystery series starring actors who are better known for tackling very different kinds of roles, Irish Blood sees Silverstone join the ranks of such performers as Lucy Lawless, Jane Seymour, and Stephen Moyer who’ve all tried their hands at solving crime, but this series is a bit different than its network siblings. Here, Silverstone plays an American—albeit one that is swiftly transplanted to the gorgeous wilds of Ireland—and the show is more concerned with a single season-long arc than the weekly procedural-style mysteries the streamer’s other series favor.

The story follows Fiona Sharpe, a successful divorce lawyer whose father abandoned her and her mother when she was just a child. Decades later, an out-of-the-blue message sends her on an unexpected journey to Ireland, where she’ll reconnect with her family’s history,  to solve the mystery of his sudden disappearance, and maybe even discover that a lot of her assumptions about where she came from were wrong.

Here’s the series synopsis.

A six-part murder mystery, Irish Blood focuses on Fiona, whose path in life is earmarked by her father, Declan, who seemingly abandoned her and her mother on her tenth birthday. After years of channeling anger toward him, to the benefit of her litigious clients, a message from her father sends her to Ireland. There she learns key truths about her father as well as a family that doesn’t know she exists, and, moreover, that the story of abandonment that has shaped her entire life – was a lie. A lie intended to protect her and her mother from her father’s shady business dealings. Fiona resolves to uncover the full truth about her father and reconnect with the parent she only thought she knew.

Silverstone stars alongside Jason O’Mara (The Man in the High Castle), Wendy Crewson (We Were Liars), Dearbhla Molloy (Hullraisers), Simone Kirby (The Buccaneers), Ruth Codd (How to Train Your Dragon), and Leonardo Taiwo (Liaison).

Irish Blood officially premieres on Monday, August 11, but we’re thrilled to have a first look at the show for you right now. In this clip, Silverstone’s Fiona receives a mysterious and unexpected package from Ireland, which seems set to change her life forever.

Irish Blood premieres Monday, August 11, with two episodes on Acorn TV. New episodes will follow weekly.
