Charli XCX announces new album Music, Fashion, Film

After teasing her new era with two singles—four, if you count their corresponding B-sides—Charli XCX has announced a new album: Music, Fashion, Film, the hotly anticipated follow-up to her 2024 breakthrough record, Brat (her soundtrack for Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights notwithstanding). She’s also revealed the cover for the project, which features a photo of John Cale, Marc Jacobs, and Martin Scorcese—all titans in their respective fields and inspirations to Charli. Like all of the music videos in this album cycle, the art for Music, Fashion, Film is shot in black and white. According to Charli herself, the record is “11 tracks, 30 minutes, 5 seconds.”

The album’s title comes from a line in the recent single “SS26,” in which Charli declares, “We’re walking on a runway that goes straight to Hell / Nothing’s gonna save us, not music, fashion, or film.” Charli implied (and later denied) that her upcoming record is a rock album. Strains of pop punk and shoegaze are definitely apparent on “Rock Music” and “Playboy Bunny” respectively, but we’ll have to see if “our version of analog” extends to the rest of Music, Fashion, Film. So far this spring, we have featured both “Rock Music” and “SS26” in our recurring Best New Songs column, with the former being named Song of the Week on May 14.
