Noah Kahan: singer, songwriter, Paste digital cover star, poster… furry? The musician stopped by Pittsburgh this weekend as part of his Great Divide Tour, a run of shows best known thus far for fans pooping their pants at the barricade. Kahan may not approve of GA pit defecation, but he made clear that he’s a big supporter of a different subset of his fans: furries, thousands of whom descended on the city last weekend for AnthroCon, the world’s biggest furry convention. On July 3, Kahan posted on X, “Pittsburgh: if you are caught between attending the worlds largest furry convention or my show tonight then please know you are welcome to combine the two.” A fan asked Kahan what his fursona would be, to which he replied, “Squid man.” (For the record, this would be a rarity; aquatic creatures only represent about 1.6% of fursonas in the community.)
That night, at PNC Park, Kahan continued to riff on his nonhuman fans. “Furries are welcome. All the animal kingdom is welcome tonight,” he announced from the stage. “I don’t see any so far, but I will be looking and asking a lot of questions after the show.” In the middle of his performance, he answered a gag phone call from the “National Center For Furry Awareness” to learn about the group’s copulative habits. “Oh, they don’t have sex… not necessarily?” he said. “Okay, well, that’s good to know.” He also put on a furry mask himself, telling the crowd, “If there are any furries in the crowd? Hell yeah.”
