When Neil Armstrong first stepped foot on the moon in 1969, humanity as a whole began dreaming of the day we’d be able to launch the first doughnut into space. Two brothers from Sweden finally enabled that giant leap for doughnutkind, and they even have a video of the tasty treat’s epic journey.
Time reports that the brothers, Alexander and Benjamin Jönsson, traveled to Norway to attach a doughnut and camera to a weather balloon that they would then send up nearly 20 miles above the earth’s surface. Alexander Jönsson told Swedish news outlet The Local that he’s always had an affinity for space and weather balloons. As far as why he and his brother chose a doughnut as their space cadet, he explained. “We had the idea that we should send something really crazy up into space and thought ‘Hey, nobody has ever sent a doughnut up before.’”
The doughnut did resemble a confectionery version of Sandra Bullock in Gravity when it encountered some peril that would would send it crashing down into Lake Vättern in Sweden. Fortunately, the astro-doughnut survived and was recovered by the Swedish Sea Rescue Society.
