“The Night Josh Tillman Came to Our Apartment” is the funniest song on Father John Misty’s excellent 2015 album I Love You, Honeybear, so it makes sense that it’s also, thus far, the funniest video. Not that the two are thematically related—the video, released today, has nothing of the savage dressing-down Tillman inflicts on his former lover in the lyrics, with his barbed-casual style. Instead, this is purely Tillman on Tillman—seducing himself in a bar through the use of video magic, snorting coke with himself in an apartment, swimming with himself in a pool, and finally consummating the special evening.
And if the video is great (watch it above), the statement Tillman released is almost as good:
“This video is partially inspired by the LeBron James quote ‘It is precisely the superficial differences between people who are otherwise alike that inform the hostilities between them.’ Special thanks to my body double Tyler who I had to kiss no fewer than two dozen times and whose breath I can still smell in my mind’s eye.”
The video is directed by Drew Pearce, who has actually helped write Hollywood blockbusters in the Iron Man and Mission Impossible series. “It has been an honor to explore the palpable sexual chemistry that exists between Josh Tillman and himself,” Pearce said. “I hope this video does their enduring love affair justice.”
