FX’s Fargo Season 3 Will be Set in 2010, With at Least One Character Returning

FX has continued to unveil new details about the third season of its Emmy-winning black comedy-crime drama Fargo.

The upcoming 10-episode season will take place in its most contemporary time period yet. 2010 to be exact, only six years after the events of season one. But don’t expect to see the series return anytime soon. Showrunner Noah Hawley told press back in December that the new series probably wouldn’t make it back to our small screens until the spring of 2017.

FX Network’s CEO John Landgraf revealed the time period for the third installment last Saturday during the Television Critics Association’s press tour in Pasadena, Calif. Landgraf also teased that at least one character would officially be returning, though he couldn’t share which one.

“As far as I know, there is one [character returning],” Landgraf told reporters. “That doesn’t mean [Hawley] might not change his mind and there might not be more.”

Hawley had previously stated season three would follow the recurring trend of each installment having a connection to its predecessor.

“There are going to be connections, the way the first year was connected to the movie and the second year was connected to the first, but I think part of the fun is figuring that stuff out and I wouldn’t want to take that away from anybody,” Hawley told Entertainment Weekly. “There will be definitely things that connect to something in our story.”

Season one of the critically acclaimed anthology, based on the 1996 Coen brothers movie of the same name, starred Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman. The Patrick Wilson and Kirsten Dunst starring season two had an entirely different cast with the exception of Wilson’s character, Lou Solverson. Solverson was played by Keith Carradine in the series’ first year.
