Guillermo Del Toro to Adapt “Scary Stories to Tell In The Dark”

The master of dark fantasy (and our movie-loving hearts) Guillermo del Tor is bringing the tales that fueled our childhood nightmares to life in CBS Films’ adaptation of Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

The script, based on Schwartz’s collection of folklore, ghost stories and urban legends, has already been penned by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory writer, August Waters.

Tel Doro will develop and produce the trilogy of tales for the big screen, with the potential to direct. Sean Daniel, Jason Brown and Elizabeth Grave will also serve as producers for the project.

The book series’ first installment was released back in 1981, and has since been pulled periodically from school library shelves after being deemed too scary for children—particularly owing to the mind-bending illustrations. It has also earned its own documentary discussing the book series’ cultural impact. The famous director is apparently a huge fan of the stories, having collected several original pieces by the books’ illustrator Stephen Gammell.

Confirmation about Del Toro’s involvement came from the man himself yesterday over twitter, but it remains unclear when the film will start production given the many projects he is presently attached to.
