Amblin Entertainment Taps Lupita Nyong’o, Ava DuVernay for Sci-Fi Thriller

Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment is about to go into business with two very high-profile artists.

Lupita Nyong’o, an Academy Award winner and recently appearing in Star Wars, is in the middle of the negotiations process for a lead role in Intelligent Life. The sci-fi thriller is reportedly a re-imagining of an earlier project from Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow.

Trevorrow’s and his artistic collaborator Derek Connoly have already written the script, which follows a U.N. worker in a department created to represent humankind in the event of alien contact. Nyong’o will play the woman at the center of the alien contact. Frank Marshall will produce alongside Trevorrow and the production company Big Beach.

Nyong’o isn’t the only heavy-hitter being looked at for a key production role, though. Golden Globe and Academy Award-nominated Ava DuVernay has been offered the director’s chair for the film. This comes amid another offer from Disney to direct the big-screen adaptation of the beloved children’s fantasy novel A Wrinkle in Time. There is apparently no scheduling conflict between the two projects, so the highly sought-after director could realistically do both—and we’re fine with that.

Amblin is looking to start production on the film in the summer.
