The First Official Trailer for Batman: The Killing Joke is Glorious

A few weeks ago, an enterprising fan managed to get their hands on some footage from The Killing Joke and make an amateur trailer. Even from that bootleg, we could discern that this movie looks pretty damn awesome.

Now, we’ve finally gotten an official trailer for the film, which features Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill reprising their iconic roles as Batman and the Joker from the ‘90s animated series. Both absolutely shine in the limited dialogue we hear in the trailer, and though we have little idea of what the plot will entail, simply pitting the Caped Crusader against Gotham’s most chaotic force should ensure that this film rocks.

We also can’t help but note how ballsy The Killing Joke’s very existence is. We haven’t seen this animation style in mainstream movies since the ‘90s, and the film is rated R to boot—and not for crass content, the way Deadpool was. An animated R-rated movie is a rare beast indeed, but given the mature, dark possibilities that combination opens up for storytelling, we’ve got very high hopes for this film.

Batman: The Killing Joke will premiere at San Diego Comic Con in July. Its wider release date has yet to be announced.
