The New Power Rangers Suits Look Like Insectoid Iron Man

Movies News

The upcoming Power Rangers film is taking on a decidedly alien look. First, we got a look at the new design for Elizabeth Banks’ Rita Repulsa, who looks more like a lethal, scaly lizard-woman than a witch queen. Today, Entertainment Weekly revealed the suits that the Power Rangers themselves will wear in the film, and they’re a far cry from the velvety spandex that characterized the ‘90s original.

The shiny plate in the middle of each one’s chest makes us think there’s an arc reactor hidden somewhere, a la Tony Stark. The rest of the suits appear quite ready for combat against a dangerous, reptilian space sorceress, with hard armor, piping that outlines the muscles, and intimidating-as-hell masks. Only the boob armor on the Yellow and Pink Rangers looks weird, in the proud tradition of bizarre female fantasy genre armor … but when you think about it, it sort of makes sense. “Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made,” production designer Andrew Menzies told EW. “You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.”

If the costumes thus far are an indication of where the Power Rangers movie is going, it’s going to be worthwhile for more than just old fans of the show.
