Javier Muñoz is Replacing Lin-Manuel Miranda in Hamilton

Music News Lin Manuel Miranda

Hamilton’s last show with the original cast, including Lin-Manuel Miranda, will be on July 9. As Paste previously reported, Miranda plans to leave Hamilton to pursue other projects like Disney’s Mary Poppins sequel. Javier Munoz, the current understudy for Alexander Hamilton who plays Hamilton twice a week, will take over the starring role on July 11, according to USA Today.

Luckily for Hamilton fans, Miranda will continue to make appearances during live performances. After the Tonys, he told reporters, “I have written a role that I cannot age out of! I intend to drop in on this thing. I feel very lucky that I have built something that I can drop in on over and over again. … Flash forward to 20 years from now, you’re going to be like, ‘Lin, when will you stop playing Hamilton?’”

Muñoz has been involved in Hamilton since it began in January of 2015. However, in the show’s first year, Muñoz underwent cancer treatment and Miranda (Muñoz’s understudy at the time) played Hamilton. Muñoz finished treatment in January and says he is now “fit and ready” to perform seven shows each week. Muñoz’s alternate has not yet been announced. Muñoz previously served as Miranda’s understudy in In the Heights.

Two performances will also be filmed later in June with the original cast, though it is unclear what the footage will be used for.
