Netflix Says No New Jessica Jones or Daredevil Until 2018, No New Agent Carter Ever

The next seasons of Marvel’s Jessica Jones and Daredevil are quite a ways off: they won’t be releasing on Netflix until 2018, Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos told IGN.

This is largely due to the streamer’s shows already slated for the next two years. Luke Cage is coming out in September, while Iron Fist is releasing early next year. The Defenders, which will bring all of these heroes together, will then release after that.

When asked if The Punisher would show up in The Defenders, Sarandos only said “Uh … stay tuned.” However, Sarandos did say, “We’re gonna try to make them quicker so we can get less downtime between them,” so perhaps after these next few premieres, we will start to see Netflix’s Marvel shows with increasing frequency.

As for Agent Carter, which was canceled earlier this year by ABC after its second season, the show sadly won’t be saved by Netflix. After fan petitioned for Netflix to pick the series up, Sarandos explained to EW that their current slate of Marvel shows are keeping them busy and that legal issues prevented them from acquiring and distributing Agent Carter. Sarandos said:

We’re looking for truly original brands to own, and in that Marvel space we already have [original comic book shows] – so that was mostly why. They also have some output deal complexities. So when you pick it up, being able to pick it up globally is difficult even after it’s canceled. Some of those output partners still had it on the air, so they would argue its covered by their output [deals]. Unfortunately, it was a business decision more than a creative one.

It’s disappointing that business complications prevented Agent Carter from returning. As for the series Netflix does have coming up, you can watch trailers and read our coverage of Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders from San Diego Comic Con here.
