Samsung Recalls Galaxy Note 7 Following Battery Explosion Reports

Following the huge amount of hype that Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 received, it has been recalled shortly after its American release on Aug. 19. The phone’s issue is similar to those of many other battery-powered devices of its ilk: the battery might explode. The recall was issued after 35 reports of the battery’s spontaneous combustion due to overheating. Similar devices have had such issues in the past: MacBooks, e-cigarettes and the infamous “hoverboard” have all come under fire for the exploding battery problem, as well.

Samsung confirmed the recall in a statement to Gizmodo, explaining:

In response to recently reported cases of the new Galaxy Note7, we conducted a thorough investigation and found a battery cell issue. To date (as of September 1) there have been 35 cases that have been reported globally and we are currently conducting a thorough inspection with our suppliers to identify possible affected batteries in the market. However, because our customers’ safety is an absolute priority at Samsung, we have stopped sales of the Galaxy Note7. For customers who already have Galaxy Note7 devices, we will voluntarily replace their current device with a new one over the coming weeks.

Samsung has stopped global sales of the phone and is issuing replacements phone for customer who have already purchased the device.

With Apple’s iPhone 7 release looming, Samsung is under a lot of pressure to right their wrongs, les users jump ship and move to the Apple camp.
