Jon Favreau Teaming With Disney for Live-Action Lion King

Movies News Disney

Jon Favreau made Disney a boatload of money with his live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book. Now, Disney has confirmed that Favreau will follow that project up with a live-action adaptation of Disney’s seminal animated film the The Lion King.

Favreau tweeted the news this morning, but it was quickly removed from his page. Now, though, it has returned along with an official announcement from Disney. The film will continue the studio’s current trend of reworking their animated properties into live-action films like Cinderella, Maleficent and most recently, The Jungle Book.

While this new adaptation does not have a set release date yet, it will likely attempt to follow up on what Favreau did with The Jungle Book. That film, which made almost $1 billion worldwide, featured a single live actor surrounded by digitally rendered animals. Notably, the original The Lion King does not feature any humans at all, and so it presumably won’t have the benefit of any human actors.

Favreau is also working with the studio on The Jungle Book 2, which doesn’t have a set release date as of yet. The studio’s next live-action adaptation will be Beauty and the Beast, which is set to hit theaters in 2017. Check out Favreau’s original tweet below.
