Annette Bening Finds Herself in the First Trailer for 20th Century Women

For many, Christmas is a day for spending time with those you love and remembering all the good in the world. Alternatively, it’s a day you spend alone in a movie theater watching the ridiculous number of films coming out around Dec. 25. One of those releases is 20th Century Women, which just debuted its first trailer.

Directed by Mike Mills (Beginners), 20th Century Women is a look at the way women of different ages were dealing with femininity, materialism and sexuality in 1979. The trailer opens with Jimmy Carter’s famous speech about the lack of faith in democracy and the lack of fulfillment in American life, which seems like a pretty perfect table-setter.

Starring Annette Bening in a performance that’s sure to put her in the Oscar conversation, 20th Century Women is a look at the emotional stresses of that point in time, one in which anxieties were high and many were confused. The film also stars Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig and Billy Crudup as other emotionally fractured people.

20th Century Women hits theaters on Christmas Day. Check out the full trailer above, and find out what things were like the last time people lost faith in government.
