2017 Grammy Nominations Announced

This morning the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, with the help of Meghan Trainor, announced the nominees for the 59th Annual Grammy Awards.

To nobody’s surprise, Beyoncé and Adele are all over the major categories for Lemonade and 25, respectively. Probably the biggest surprise is Sturgill Simpson’s nomination in the Album of the Year category, though it’s definitely not undeserved—A Sailor’s Guide to Earth was one of our favorite albums of the year.

One of the biggest names in music, Frank Ocean, isn’t anywhere to be seen in the nominations, but that’s not the Academy’s fault. Ocean didn’t submit his albums for consideration because of the Academy’s frequent snubbing of black artists (the most prominent modern example probably being Kendrick Lamar losing out to Taylor Swift and Macklemore). Ocean referred to his stance as his “Colin Kaepernick moment.”

Chance the Rapper’s nominations, including Best New Artist and Best Rap Album, for his mixtape Coloring Book, are thanks to new rules instated this year that say streaming-only albums can now be awarded. The old rules required albums to be sold commercially to be eligible for nominations, but the rise of artists on both free and paid streaming services, with Chance as the movement’s biggest star, led to the rule change. Completely free albums on sites like Soundcloud and Bandcamp still aren’t eligible to be nominated, but the loosening of the rules allows the awards to cover artists who are on services like Spotify and Apple Music.

With host James Corden leading the way, the 2017 Grammys will be awarded on Feb. 12, 2017. You can see the major nominations below and go here to see the entire list.
