Calvin Klein Reveals First Raf Simons Collection Celebrating Women, Inclusion and Millie Bobby Brown

Quietly and without fanfare, Calvin Klein’s new creative director Raf Simons revealed his first collection, Calvin Klein by Appointment. The collection, which stars America’s favorite pre-teen Millie Bobby Brown, seems to mark a new, more inclusive direction for the company. The website boasts that the 14-piece collection is “no longer solely for celebrities, rather an open made-to-measure service.” This message of inclusion is boosted by Simons’ statement: “Calvin Klein By Appointment 1-14 is very much about celebrating the American woman and American fashion.”

Within this theme of unity and celebration, the collection is quite the range of styles, borrowing from every decade of American fashion and the “cheerleader,” “debutante” and “majorette” looks, combined with pop iconography. The 14 distinct pieces were photographed by famed fashion photographer Willy Vanderperre and styled by Belgian collaborator Olivier Rizzo. The obvious star of the collection is rising fashion icon Bobby Brown, of Stranger Things fame, who sports yellow- and red-beaded, fringe-draped asymmetrical over a white T-shirt tucked into red trousers. The collection also includes models Abbey Lee Kershaw, Kiki Willems, Jamie Bochert and Julia Nobis. Other looks include a playful purple velvet dress with a large upside-down “M” (or is it a “W”?), a floral two-piece and a minimalist sleeveless black dress.

It is no coincidence that a collection supporting women, equality and accessibility was released in the same weekend as the presidential inauguration and the worldwide women’s marches that brought historic crowds. Life, art and politics are intrinsically linked, and it seems fashion is no exception. Last week, Paste posted on how Balenciaga’s new line was inspired by the Bernie Sanders campaign, and writer Jason Rhode discussed how the art world meshes and collides with the Trump and Clinton families. Simons’ Calvin Klein by Appointment is just the latest in subtle fashion political statements, and we look forward to what Simons has in store for us in the coming years.
