Black Lips Announce New Sean Lennon-Produced Album Satan’s graffiti or God’s art?

Some welcome news: Black Lips will have a new album out this year. Throughout last year the band holed themselves up in upstate New York with Sean Lennon to put together what they consider to be their most “musically evolved” record to date.

Boasting an 18-song tracklist, Satan’s graffiti or God’s art?—which might be in the early running for Album Title of the Year—promises to be an ambitious release, but not at the sacrifice of the raw-edged DIY spirit that has made the band consistently great. In a press release, the band states that it is “as creatively unhinged as it is precisely executed,” a description that sounds right up Lennon’s twisted, psychedelic alley. Arriving three years after Black Lips’ last effort, Underneath the Rainbow, the album also marks the studio return of guitarist Jack Hines, who left in 2004, but was brought back into the fold following the departure of longtime member Ian St. Pé. It also features guest vocals from a frequent Sean Lennon collaborator who’s also his mom: Yoko Ono.

Fans can get a first taste of the album with the ferocious first single “Can’t Hold On,” which finds Cole Alexander’s shredded vocals up against a mic of punk-rock guitar, pounding drums and some Spanish-sounding horn parts.

Satan’s graffiti or God’s art? is out May 5 via Vice Records. You can find the album art and tracklist below, along with the band’s upcoming U.S. tour dates and a Black Lips Daytrotter session from 2011. “Can’t Hold On” is available to stream and purchase now.
