Kerry Washington, Warner Bros. to Adapt Brit Bennett’s The Mothers for the Big Screen

Brit Bennett’s debut novel and New York Times bestseller The Mothers has been tapped by Warner Bros. for a screen adaptation, with Kerry Washington producing under the Simpson Street Banner, THR reports.

Simpson Street’s debut production, HBO’s Confirmation, (which starred Washington and earned her Emmy, SAG and Golden Globe Award nominations for her performance as Anita Hill) garnered an Emmy nomination for best movie made for TV.

Bennett’s book, which was published in October by Riverhead, is set in a black community in a small, suburban Southern California town where a big secret shakes up the lives of several residents. Navigating motifs of loss, friendship and young love, the story centers on Nadia, a teen who, grieving in the wake of her mother’s suicide, starts a relationship with Luke, the pastor’s son, and becomes pregnant. The decision she makes affects not only her life and relationships for years to come, but also those of Luke and Nadia’s best friend, Aubrey.

Natalie Krinsky, who wrote the YA adaptation of I’ll Give You the Sun for Warner Bros., will be producing the project alongside Washington. Bennett herself will be penning the script.

Based on the ripples Bennett’s book has been making since its publication and the significant backing the forthcoming project is receiving, it sounds like the Mothers film will be one to watch out for.
